Resilience takes on new meaning when you meet Tanner Gresham, a former Army West Point pitcher now pursuing his professional baseball dreams within the Philadelphia Phillies organization while maintaining his military commitment.

Growing up the son of a nine-year minor league veteran, baseball was always central to Tanner's life. Those formative years spent traveling to tournaments with his father laid the groundwork for his disciplined approach to the game. But it was his decision to attend West Point that truly tested and strengthened his character. Imagine waking at 6:30 AM for formation, attending rigorous classes, and then spending hours at baseball practice – all while maintaining military standards and obligations. This wasn't college athletics; this was something altogether more demanding.

Tanner's resolve faced its ultimate challenge when he suffered a UCL tear requiring Tommy John surgery before his senior year. With no option for a medical redshirt at the Academy, he was forced to compress a typically 14-18 month recovery into just 11 months. The surgery itself was unique – doctors reattached his original UCL and reinforced it with a ligament from his wrist, essentially giving him "two UCLs" in his pitching arm. Through 30-40 weekly hours of rehabilitation alongside his academic and military responsibilities, Tanner embodied his father's wisdom: "The harder you work now, the less you have to work later."

Now pursuing an extraordinary opportunity through the World-Class Athlete Program, Tanner is charting a path that could allow him to continue his professional baseball career while fulfilling his military service, potentially culminating in representing the USA at the 2028 Olympics. His story reminds us that success comes from who you surround yourself with and focusing on the future rather than present hardships. As Tanner himself puts it with military precision, "There are only two things you control: effort and attitude."
