Courage takes many forms, but sometimes the bravest act isn't rushing into battle—it's admitting when you're not okay. In this raw and powerful conversation, active-duty Sergeant First Class Alexander Stewart takes us through his remarkable journey from a New York kid inspired by 9/11 to a decorated combat veteran of Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria.
Stewart speaks with extraordinary clarity about the evolution of his leadership philosophy through multiple combat deployments, describing how he transformed from an abrasive young NCO to a respected leader who understood that technical proficiency means nothing without genuine human connection. "I showed up as a platoon sergeant and went to the NCO of the month board," he shares. "When my soldiers said they didn't have time to prepare for boards, I could say: I'm a father, a husband, a platoon sergeant taking care of all of you—and I still had time to study and win."
What makes Stewart's story truly exceptional is his willingness to confront mental health struggles while still wearing the uniform. Despite facing institutional barriers—including being labeled "low risk" and denied treatment—he channeled his experiences into his poetry collection "Unspoken Words" and became an advocate who has helped prevent over 27 suicides among fellow service members.
The most powerful moment came when Stewart's wife read his poetry: "She broke down crying for like 30 minutes and just looked at me. 'Is this it? Is this how you feel? Is this what you went through?'" That breakthrough transformed their relationship and revealed the healing power of articulating trauma when direct conversation fails.
Having lost 31 military friends to suicide, Stewart's message is urgent and clear: "It's completely okay to not be okay." His story illuminates how true strength isn't found in silence but in having the courage to acknowledge our wounds—both visible and invisible—and reach out for help before the chaos inside becomes unmanageable.
